Into to Art

Open to 9-12
1 Trimester Period 1 Credit
Prerequisite: None

Students will learn about art and themselves from a broad perspective, exploring the ideas of art appreciation, art history, the basic elements of art and design as well as production of artwork using a wide range of art mediums. Students will be taught basic art skills and will use a sketchbook daily. Grades are based on tests, quizzes, sketches and projects. Emphasis on the idea that art is all around us everyday and art as a means of communication.

Applied Art

Open to 9-12
1 Trimester Period 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Intro to Art

Applied Art explores many traditional crafts including papermaking, wood cut printmaking, batik, marbled paper, tile mosaic and more. A fun and practical application of art skills. Minimal drawing skills required. Grade based on projects, tests and knowledge of techniques and history of each individual craft.

Ceramics

Open to 9-12
1 Trimester Period 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Intro to Art

Ceramics students will learn the history and characteristics of clay and ceramics from prehistory to today. Projects are based on the basic hand building techniques with introduction to wheel thrown pottery. Glazing and firing techniques will also be shown. Grades are based on tests, projects and project evaluation.

 
 
Ceramics II & III

Open to 9-12
1 Trimester Period 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Intro to Art and Ceramics

Ceramics II -
Ceramics will cover advanced hand building and wheel techniques. Students will be involved in all stages of ceramics from raw clay to finished product. Students also participate in an outdoor primitive firing.

Ceramics III -
In this course students work in a studio setting. The students may place emphasis on wheel pottery, hand building or both. The trimester is based on 50% instructor driven assignments and 50% in depth individual student concentration. Students will have a show of their work at the end of the trimester.

 
 
Digital Photography

Open to 9-12
1 Trimester Period 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Intro to Art

Students in this course will create and edit awesome photographs using an SLR camera and Photoshop. Students will: learn about manual settings on SLR cameras; explore the ins-and-outs of Photoshop; and study influential photographers and their methods. Each student is required to have a digital camera (SLR or Point and Shoot). We do have additional DSLRs for classroom use.

Drawing and Painting

Open to 9-12
1 Trimester Period 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Intro to Art

Drawing and Painting takes the interested student farther into the idea of 2-D design. Drawing skills will be explored more, emphasis on dramatic improvement of observational (real life) drawing. Artwork will be completed in many drawing and painting mediums. Projects will also be based on styles throughout the history of art. Artists and timelines will be introduced. Sketchbook work will continue. Grades are based on tests, quizzes, sketches, projects and an artist research paper. Emphasis on students exploring and developing their own style and art analysis based on the elements of art and the principles of design.

Graphic Design

Open to 10-12
1 Trimester Period 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Intro to Art

Students will create tshirt designs, logos, mock movie posters and enter school design contests. Students will learn how to use professional graphic editing software: Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash.

 
 
Graphic Design II

Open to 10-12
1 Trimester Period 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Graphic Design
Offered 3rd Trimester

Students will learn advanced topics in Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash and will be introduced to InDesign. Students will create ads, t-shirts designs, magazine layouts, logos, Flash animated banners, e-cards and more! Students will learn about famous graphic artists and collaborate with real clients in the school/business community.

 
 
Studio Art - Painting

Open to 9-12
1 Trimester Period 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Intro to Art and Drawing & Painting

Drawing and painting areas will build upon past experiences. Class discussions focus on what art is and the role of the artist in society. Specific explorations of styles and periods in art with emphasis on development of personal style and exploration.

 
 
AP Art

Open to 11-12
1-4 Trimester Periods 1-4 Credits
Prerequisite: Instructor Permission

This AP course is an intensive lab experience in either ceramics or painting/drawing. The student may receive college credit if a portfolio is completed, read, and approved by the AP board. Students should register for 3-4 trimester periods; with portfolio assembly being done during trimester three.
